When hunting at the River Lodge you will be doing most of your hunting on small freshwater ponds or shrimp ponds. The area is home to large brackish waters and costal lagoons making for some of the best wintering duck habitat a duck could ask for! When the ducks are coming off of those coastal areas and brackish water to get fresh water, it makes for some of the best and most consistent duck hunting Mexico has to offer! The duck hunts will not require you to travel with waders. I would suggest you bring knee-high boots. Some spots could require hip-boots but we do have those available at the lodge if you don’t want to travel with them. After an action-packed morning of duck hunting you will then enjoy a little down time in the early afternoon before headed out for an afternoon white wing dove hunt!

When Duck hunting at the Loma Colorada you will do the majority of your hunting either out on the famed Laguna Madre or fresh water ponds, on the boundaries of the Laguna. When hunting out on the Laguna you will either be hunting out of a blind on an island or in a blind that is typically 200-300 yards off the shores of the laguna. When hunting out of these types of blinds it is our recommendation to have waders. You may get by with just hip boots, but being in the water, it is much more comfortable to just have waders and not worry about getting wet! When hunting the salt water, the majority of the ducks you will be shooting will be red heads with a few pintails mixed in. The Laguna Madre is known for wintering the majority of the ENTIRE population of Red Heads, often times holding in excess of 250,000 ducks!

When you are not hunting the Laguna, you will be hunting fresh water ponds. Some freshwater ponds you will access by boat from the Laguna and others you will access by vehicle. The freshwater is typically where you will shoot a little more variety of ducks (Pintails, teal, Mexican Mallards, etc), but depending on the spot and its vicinity to the salt water these freshwater ponds can still be dominated by large populations of Red heads as well.
